It is simply for the find yourself which begins to break apart, but the smack-up finale rescues it throughout the ‘red’. Excellently staged and you can intelligently dialogued, it has zero great complications during the way of life down their very unattractive label.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Film Bulletin told you “The film movements within an easy speed, the fresh new conversation is smooth and characterisations essentially productive. The brand new film’s author and you will director, Robert Rossen, creates a great multidimensional chess games, getting mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, their manager (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s partner (Ellen Received), a good cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will an excellent scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose cousin (Nina Foch) did within gambling establishment and you can dated a good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). This new caustically epigrammatic software, the cast’s suavely controlled gestures regarding love and you will menace, and Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and stylishly cocky photos (together with his political conscience) get this pugnacious yet in depth spectacle an invisible classic of your genre.” [ 10 ]

Pic has actually motion and you may suspense, and you may specific short suits from humor to add style. Ace shows because of the Manhood Powell, just like the a betting family overseer, and you can Lee J. Cobb, while the a police inspector, and additionally in the score . Although the area uses a familiar pattern, this new characterizations was new together with shows sufficient to help you overbalance. Dialog try terse and you can relevant, avoiding the sentimental, phoney touching. Uncommon camera bases appear once in a while so you can escalate interest and you can briefly stop the interest. Strong teamplay by the Robert Rossen, doubling given that director-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, brand-new journalist and you may associate producer, and additionally aids in making it a delicate manufacturing.” [ eleven ]

Its primarily a point of watching Mr. Powell undergo his paces stylishly if you find yourself a huge shed out of actors and you will performers promote him customary assistance. Evelyn Keyes plays the great nothing woman whom brings forth the fresh best in your and you can Ellen Drew is the sleek and you may slinky vixen who gets him toward jams. Thomas Gomez is oily because the villain and Lee J. Cobb do another type of in a position concert tour just like the an exhausted police inspector just who ultimately shuts the situation. Many drinking and you can smoking is performed because of the all alarmed.” [ 12 ]
