Wonderfully staged and you will smartly dialogued, it will have zero high challenge inside the living down the very unappealing term.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Motion picture Bulletin told you “The movie movements on an instant rate, brand new discussion was smooth and you will characterisations basically energetic. The newest film’s creator and you may movie director, Robert Rossen, sets up a multidimensional chess games, getting mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, their workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a beneficial scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose aunt (Nina Foch) did on local casino and you may old a beneficial corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). Although the area pursue a common trend, the brand new characterizations are new and the performances good enough in order to overbalance. Its mainly an issue of seeing Mr. Powell undergo their paces fashionably if you find yourself a massive shed off stars and actresses bring your vintage assistance. Evelyn Keyes plays the favorable little woman whom brings forth brand new finest in your and you will Ellen Drew is the smooth and slinky vixen who becomes your on the jams. Thomas Gomez are fatty once the villain and you may Lee J. Cobb do a different sort of in a position trip just like the a weary cops inspector whom finally closes your situation.
